Book Review: Henry! You're Hungry Again?! by Mary Evanson Bleckwehl

Sweet! I get to eat! Henry's hungry. All the time! He eats and eats, but why doesn't he feel big and strong afterward? Will anyone rescue Henry from the world of sweets and junk food? Or will he turn into the weakest kid in school? Are you a hungry Henry, too? This funny and tasty morsel of a story will have you running to the kitchen cupboard and hopefully finding what makes you big and strong. Food is a requirement. Laughter is, too. Get your dose today. (Goodreads)

I was sent this book by the author who just so happens to live in my hometown. I do not know her however! I was intrigued by the cover art at first and thought my five year old would love it. He did! We have since read it over ten times! Many kids could relate to this story of little Henry and his constant appetite! Many parents can relate to having kids who ONLY want to eat the sugary, bad stuff. This tale portrays the down side to only eating the bad quite well; the constant hunger, the wobbly legs, the no energy, etc. It wraps it up with a fairy tale told to Henry by his gym teacher that convinces Henry to eat right and to spread the goodness on to his friends and family and teachers.

Very cute illustrations, bright colors and a precocious little boy brings this story to life. Fit for a multitude of ages, ranging from 4 to 10. To purchase, click on the author's website below.

Children's Book Review: The Museum by Susan Verde, Art by Peter H. Reynolds

When I see a work of art, something happens in my heart!
As a little girl tours and twirls through the halls of the art museum, she finds herself on an exciting adventure. Each piece of art evokes something new inside of her: silliness, curiosity, joy, and ultimately inspiration. When confronted with an empty white canvas, she is energized to create and express herself—which is the greatest feeling of all.
With exuberant illustrations by Peter H. Reynolds, The Museum playfully captures the many emotions experienced through the power of art, and each child’s unique creative process. (Goodreads)

I picked this book up from work from our Abrams Publishing Rep. I am a huge fan of Peter H. Reynolds' art. He has done the art for many books I have on my shelf for my son. His art is whimsical and sweet. He brings the story to life so perfectly which each author he pairs up with. Susan Verde's words about a young girl's experience touring a museum are right on. She portrays the emotions that art can make us feel. The story also brings up the importance of creativity and expressing yourself.

My son and I read it last night and he really enjoyed it. Sweet message and beautiful art work. Recommended to read to any child ages 3 to 10.

Children's Book Review: Exclamation Point by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld

From the bestselling creators of Duck! Rabbit!, an exciting tale of self-discovery!

He stood out here.

He stood out there.

He tried everything to be more like them.

It's not easy being seen. Especially when you're NOT like everyone else. Especially when what sets you apart is YOU.

Sometimes we squish ourselves to fit in. We shrink. Twist. Bend. Until -- ! -- a friend shows the way to endless possibilities.

In this bold and highly visual book, an emphatic but misplaced exclamation point learns that being different can be very exciting! Period. (Goodreads)

It's been a little while since I've highlighted a children's book that I am reading. I couldn't possibly keep up reviewing all the books I read with my son. We read up to five daily. Since he just turned five, he is actively reading now. We are knee deep in the first step of chapter books. Frog and Toad are our good friends!

I've been getting some wonderful books sent to me from Scholastic and I just have to share them with you all.

Exclamation Point by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld is absolutely delightful. When teaching our son how to read, we emphasized the importance of using emotion in your voice when you read a sentence ending in an exclamation mark. He would do it so over the top it was adorable. I just knew he would love this book and he did.

It's sweet. It's simple. The illustrations are just right on. I love that the Question Mark can only ask questions and once the Exclamation Point gets going, lets out his excitement! It has a sweet message. Finding who you are and being proud of it!

Thank you to Scholastic for sending me a copy to enjoy and share with you all.

If you have a young child in your life, this is a wonderful pick to read to them. Any of Amy or Tom's books do the trick. All of them are so lovely and well done.
